Our Story
Hakusui was founded by two Japanese entrepreneurs, Tetsuro and Yuta, who built their careers in global tech across Tokyo, Singapore, and the U.S. Bay Area.
In the fast-moving tech industry, where efficiency and scale define success, they began to reflect on the Zen spirit they had inherited through tradition.
They came to believe that life is not a goal to achieve, but a process to experience, and that true wellbeing lies in presence and balance.
Japanese culture is more than sushi or ramen. It is subtlety, stillness, and depth.
Matcha is one of its purest expressions.
For Tetsuro, tea was part of childhood.
His grandmother was a tea ceremony master. He remembers the scent of tatami mats, the soft sound of water boiling, the delicate motion of the bamboo whisk against the bowl.
"Tea is not only about taste", she used to say. "It is about preparing the mind."
Those moments quietly stayed with him.
Yuta’s journey began with kendo at the age of four, guided by his grandfather.
Through years of training and later life in the U.S. Bay Area tech world, Zen discipline became his foundation.
Together, they share a single mission: to bring an authentic Zen experience to the world—through matcha.
They decided to build a brand that would present matcha as it truly is.
Not simply as a luxury ingredient, but as a craft.
A product shaped by land, by farmers, by time, and by philosophy.
Who made it.
Where it came from.
And what kind of dedication lives inside a single bowl.
That idea became Hakusui.
"HAKU (伯)" represents distinction and quiet nobility, also inspired by the "HACK" culture of Silicon Valley where the two founders built their careers — a mindset rooted in constant experimentation, rapid iteration, and relentless improvement toward something better.
"SUI (翠)" represents a deep, vibrant blue-green that symbolizes nature, clarity, and vitality — the living essence reflected in the rich color of matcha.
Rooted in tradition, refined through modern sensibility.
A matcha brand born at the intersection of Japanese craftsmanship and global perspective - combining the clarity of technology with the calm of tea culture.
If a single cup of Hakusui can bring stillness to someone's busy day,
or help someone far from Japan feel the depth of its culture, then it is already fulfilling its purpose.
